The Norwegian Royal Court announced yesterday, 26 May 2025, that Princess Ingrid Alexandra, the eldest child of Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit, will begin her studies at the University of Sydney in Australia in August.
Princess Ingrid Alexandra to Study at the University of Sydney
Her Royal Highness Princess Ingrid Alexandra will begin her studies at the University of Sydney in August, enrolling in a Bachelor of Arts program.
She has chosen a three-year degree with a focus on international relations and political economy.
The Princess will be studying full-time and reside in a student residence on campus. Her Royal Highness looks forward to dedicating herself to her studies in the years to come.
The princess finished her military service in April this year. I think it will be good for her to be able to study in a country where she is less likely to get too much media attention and she will thus be able to lead a "normal life" for some time. But obviously, as among others fellow historian Trond Norén Isaksen has pointed out in media and on his Facebook account, her decision to study abroad, and in a country as far away as Australia, means that her number of public engagements will be very limited for quite some time, which will be a challenge to the royal house, which is under-staffed due to age and health issues and due to Princess Märtha Louise being out of the picture. We don't know yet what plans Prince Sverre Magnus has for the near future, but one can only hope that he will step up, even though it has never been the plan that he should have a central role in the future.
